National Law School of India University (NLSIU)

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is institute of national importance. Government of Karnataka established this university on August 29, 1987, in the state capital Bangalore. Its Founder, Dr. NR Madhava Menon appointed the first Director of the university.

The NLSIU commenced first academic session from July 1988 from the campus of Central College, Bangalore University. Later, in 1992, the university shifted to its present location in own campus. The first batch student enrolled in Integrated Law Program, BA LLB of 5 years duration.  The NLISU has a general council, an academic council, a finance committee, and an executive council to look after the institute’s operations.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore offers academic programs, undergraduate programs Integrated BA LLB and postgraduate program LLM. The institute also offers research degrees M.Phil. and Ph.D in Philosophy and LLD in Law.  To carry out research in various areas of law and judiciary, the university has 10 research centers. These are:
  • Centre for Child and the Law (CCL)
  • Centre for Women & the Law (CWL)
  • Centre for Environmental Education, Research and Advocacy (CEERA)
  • The Centre for Intellectual Property Research and Advocacy (CIPRA)
  • Centre for the Study of Casteism, Communalism and Law (CSCCL)
  • National Institute of Human Rights (NIHR)
  • The Institute of Law & Ethics in Medicine (TILEM)
  • National Institute for Alternate Disputes Resolution (NIADR)
  • Centre for Outreach Programmes (COP)
  • International Bar Association- Continuing Legal Education Centre (IBA-CLE)
The National Law School of India University has the responsibility to produce eligible human resources to take care for the law and judiciary. Besides offering on campus program the NLSIU also offers off campus distance learning programs for the education of people who cannot attend regular classes but has interests in legal studies. Following programs are offered through distance education mode-
  • A two year Master of Business Laws (P.G. Degree)
  • One year P.G. Diploma in Human Rights Law
  • One year P.G. Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics
  • One year P.G. Diploma in Environmental Law
  • One year P.G. Diploma in Intellectual Property Rights Law
  • One year P.G. Diploma in Child Rights Law
The National Law School of India University is a participating institution in centralized Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Admission into undergraduate and postgraduate programs are offered on the basis of performance in CLAT. The university conducts interviews for admission into research programs. Direct admissions are offered into distance learning programs.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has a magnificent library. It has 40000 volumes of books and journals etc. The University subscribes to many international online databases like Westlaw International, JSTOR, Kluwer Online, Springer Link etc. which contains enormous resources like international case reporters, statutes, and articles from law reviews, an invaluable source for a law school student. A new library building of NLSIU is underdevelopment, funds for which came from UGC and Mrs. Sudha Murthy of Infosys.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is a residential institution. All full time program students are offered hostel facilities. Faculty and staff members are offered residence quarters. It’s campus is equipped with all necessary facilities like Internet, medical care, food joints, etc. Hostels have space for indoor games. Facilities for out door games are also available in the campus. All hostels are equipped with mess facilities. Various debates, quiz and hobby competitions etc are also held time to time.

Placement Services:


Placement provided by the NLSIU is optional in the first and second years, as also the jobs are in certailn NGO's only. However, in the student's third year, placement is provided with trial lawyers, and with appellate lawyers in the fourth year of study. Final year students are placed with law firms.
