Education in Bangalore was provided through religious schools till 19th century, religious leaders of particular religion controlled these schools. The western system of education brought into practice during the reign of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, when two schools were established in the region. Later in 1851, the Wesleyan Mission established a school. In 1858, the government established the Bangalore High School.

Bangalore, also known as the “Science City or Cyber City” of India has become an education hub for students from both India and abroad. The educational institutions here have excelled in the deliverance of high-standard education in various disciplines to enable students prepare for a highly competitive working environment. Bangalore has been able to achieve a high literacy rate of 83.91% with the help of several initiatives taken by the State Government and the local authorities.

Education in Bangalore is available starting from Kindergarten to Higher Education level. Schools for young children are chiefly based on the Kindergarten form of education. Bangalore has many numbers of schools for providing primary and secondary education; these schools are affiliated with any one of the board of education like Karnataka State Board, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CICSE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), and International Baccalaureate (IB).

There are three kinds of schools in Bangalore - government (run by the government), aided (financial aid is provided by the government) and un-aided private (no financial aid is provided). After successful completion of secondary schools students take admission into Pre University Courses (PUC) also known as Junior College. Successful completion of Junior College i.e. grade 11th and 12th allows students to take admission into college for higher education. Large numbers of colleges are available in Bangalore; also there is no dearth of institutions in Bangalore for providing post college education like Post Graduate Programs, Research Programs, etc.

There are large numbers of institutions in Bangalore for providing technical and professional education like engineering, medical, law etc. The institutions like Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), Centre for Liquid Crystal Research, National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT), M. Vishweshwaraiah Institute of Technology, B.M.S., Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) etc located in the city of Bangalore are of international repute.
